Mission or Philosophy: SER-Niños offers high quality education, developmental enrichment, and family support to children who suffer from economic hardship, geographic displacement, and social instability common to urban life today. SER-Niños is founded on the premise that every child deserves excellence in public education and that the education of children with limited resources should leave nothing to chance. A child's potential for academic achievement and personal development is significantly enhanced when teachers and parents or other primary caregivers work together for the benefit of the child. Parents are welcome and active in the life of the school. The potential for educational achievement is significantly enhanced when a child belongs to an economically stable and socially functional family. Therefore, SER-Niños works closely with community leaders, institutions, and other service agencies, in providing information, coordinated referrals, and comprehensive services to families in need.
Curriculum Design and Core Teaching Methods: Dual Language: Fifty percent of the day the students are taught in Spanish and fifty percent of the day they are taught in English. Multi-age: Students of different ages are intentionally grouped for learning. Multiage classes encourage intentionally diverse communities of learners in which differences in individual strengths, needs and learning styles compliment rather than divide. Integrated Studies and Thematic Units: Integrated Studies and thematic units allow students to be a big part of their learning environment. Themes are selected based on the interests of the students. Teachers integrate these themes into their curriculum.
Distinctive Features of the School: SER-Niños does not just focus on the child but the entire family. We do whatever it takes to make sure all our student's needs are met. We work with many support services to provide our families with the support they may need. We provide lots of opportunities for our parents to interact with the school community and to acquire knowledge on various topics that may interest them.
